Ingredients and substitutions
- Olive oil – or another neutral cooking oil like canola or avocado oil.
- Sirloin steak – you can use another cut of steak, as long as it’s thinly sliced.
- Mushrooms – leave these out if you’re not a fan of mushrooms.
- Green pepper – green pepper is the traditional option, but another colour bell pepper can be used instead.
- Red onion – white or yellow onion would also be good.
- Mozzarella cheese – use any other cheese of your choice like cheddar or Swiss.
- Hoagie rolls – you could also serve your sandwiches on a hot dog bun or plain sandwich bread.

Philly Cheesesteak Tips & Variations
Here are some of my top tips for the best ever Instant Pot Philly cheesesteak, including a few customization options:
- Freeze the steak first: To make the steak easier to slice, flash freeze it for about 30 minutes before cutting. Then, cut against the grain for the most tender beef.
- Add some seasonings: If you want your steak to be even more flavourful, add in some garlic powder or fresh garlic.
- Try out different toppings: I like topping my sandwich with mozzarella, but feel free to add any toppings of your choice like cheese sauce, American cheese, pickles, etc.
- Re-use the filling: You could use the steak filling to make stuffed peppers, low-carb lettuce wraps, salad bowls or quesadillas.
Frequently Asked Questions
I like using sirloin steak for my Instant Pot Philly cheesesteak, but you can use any cut of steak (such as rib-eye steak) as long as it’s thinly cut with the fat removed.
American cheese or cheese sauce are the traditional options, but I prefer to top my sandwich with freshly grated mozzarella cheese, as it’s a bit healthier. Feel free to use any kind of cheese of your choice like cheddar, Swiss, American, etc.
These sandwiches would be delicious with kettle chips, sweet potato fries, potato salad or green beans.
As long as you don’t go over the maximum line in your Instant Pot, you should be able to double this recipe. Cooking time will remain the same.

Storing and reheating
If you have any leftovers of this Philly cheesesteak Instant Pot recipe, store the steak filling in a container in the fridge for up to 5 days. I wouldn’t recommend storing the assembled sandwiches, as they can get soggy.
When you’re ready to enjoy, reheat the filling in a skillet on the stovetop or in the microwave for 1-2 minutes. While the steak filling is reheating, broil the hoagies, then add the steak and top with cheese to melt. Easy-peasy!
Freezing this recipe
The peppers and onions won’t freeze very well in this recipe, so if you want to freeze the steak mixture, I’d recommend leaving out the veggies. The cooked steak can be frozen for up to 3 months in a freezer-safe Ziploc bag or airtight container. Let it defrost in the fridge overnight then reheat as normal. You can reheat some veggies in a skillet on the stovetop separately (or in the Instant Pot on sauté mode) to add to your sandwich.

- 1 lb sirloin steak thinly sliced
- 1 cup mushrooms sliced
- 1 green pepper thinly sliced
- 1 small red onion thinly sliced
- 2 cups mozzarella cheese grated
- 4 hoagie rolls
Instructions
- Slice the steak into 1/4-inch thin strips, removing fat on the ends.

- While that's cooking, cut the hoagie rolls down the middle and grate the cheese, then preheat the oven to broil on high.
- Toast the rolls on a parchment-lined baking sheet in the oven for 1 minute, adding a bit of butter to each one for more flavour if desired.
- Add the meat mixture to the rolls, then top with cheese. Broil until cheese is melted, about 2 minutes, watching closely so they don't burn. Serve and enjoy!
